dominican republic

Many people¿s idea of paradise is a land of white sand beaches lined by palm trees, glistening blue waters warmed by year round sunshine, and mountainous green terrain with abundant wildlife. Fortunately for Dominicans and their more than welcome visitors, this is an unexaggerated description of the island nation of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean.

In the past few decades, a host of all-inclusive resort areas on the country¿s unspoilt eastern coastline have opened up the myriad possibilities of this tropical paradise to the world, and each year millions of visitors from near and far flock to enjoy its offerings.

Background

For those with a passion for water sports, the Dominican Republic is not merely paradise - it is heaven on earth. In the area around Bavaro and Punta Cana, a whole range of water sports are available, along with an unparalleled support structure in the form of dive centres, equipment hire and dive shops.

The scuba diving off the island¿s east coast is amongst the best in the world, with plenty of chances to see a multitude of exotic fish species and other marine life, as well as the odd wreck or two. A wide range of water sports are also catered for above the waves, with speed-boating and windsurfing being amongst the more popular activities available.

In the winter it is possible to go on organised whale watching trips, to witness the awesome spectacle of thousands of hump backed whales arriving in the waters around the island. Meanwhile, back on dry land, there are numerous wildlife and nature reserves close to the resorts, offering unprecedented opportunities to see many different species of animal in their natural habitats.

Trekking is also a popular activity outside the resorts, and takes in thousands of acres of lush valleys and forests. Further inland, the Central Cordillera Mountains run across the island like a central spine and offer trekking and hiking opportunities for the more adventurous.

But as with any place, it¿s the people that really give the Dominican Republic its character and charm. Known for their enthusiasm for life and friendly informal hospitality, Dominicans are keen music lovers and the preferred sound of the nation is Merengue, an upbeat mix of folk and dancehall music. Meanwhile, the national drink may be said to be rum, and this can be found in plentiful amounts at the many all-inclusive resorts of the Bavaro region.

Dominicans also love a good festival or carnival, and annual highlights include the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival in early November, which has in the past seen performances from the likes of Carlos Santana. At the beginning of the year, the massive two month long La Vega Carnival really gets the tempo going with a host of wild events and colourful costumes.

Those seeking paradise need search no longer, for that place exists, and it¿s to be found in the Dominican Republic.
