Mexico is sandwiched between the southern states of the US and the Central American countries of Guatemala and Belize. It is flanked by the huge sweep of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean on its western side. Cancún and the Riviera Maya form a strip on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula – a large tongue of land on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The area’s high concentration of spectacular beaches and Mayan sites makes it extremely popular. Cancún is without doubt the holidaymakers’ mecca, but the long string of much smaller and quieter resorts stretching south (known as the Riviera Maya) are gaining in popularity.
Spanish is spoken throughout the country. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but a little Spanish goes a long way.
The people of Mexico – approximately 100 million strong, with one fifth crammed in around Mexico City – are as diverse as the country’s destinations, and Indians, descendants of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic inhabitants, have retained much of their culture and language. The country is deeply religious – around 90 per cent of Mexicans are Roman Catholic, and most villages host annual festivals in honour of their local patron saint. Mexico’s street life is colourful, with the zócalo (main square) its focus. Enjoying a rich tradition of feasting and festivals, Mexicans know how to enjoy life and even celebrate death during ‘The Day of the Dead’. Many people live in vibrant, modern cities, but scattered along the coast are several unspoilt fishing villages, and inland are mountain settlements where life has changed little in the last hundred years.
