Things to Do in Greece
There are two ways to get under the skin of Greek culture, both of them equally enjoyable. One is to attend a Greek evening and the other is to take part in a festival.
- Folk evenings can be artificial events put on for tourists, but on the Ionian Islands the music and dance you will experience during a typical Greek evening is part of a living culture. Kantathes (folk songs) still play a vital part in village festivals, and they can be heard all over the islands in tavernas where local people sing to entertain each other. Equally popular is the haunting mandolin-like melody of the bouzouki.
- Festivals are common in the summer months when local people celebrate the name day of the patron saint of their church or monastery. These festivals, called panayiria, are religious in focus, but eating, drinking, music and dancing play a central role. Street vendors set up stalls selling local products and there is usually a barbecue selling delicious grilled foods.
